Baris Tunggal Dance Bali is a variant of the Baris dance, created in the early 20th century. The Baris dance itself is thought to have existed since the mid-16th century. It is mentioned in ancient Javanese poetry (1550 AD), there were seven types of Baris dance at the time which were performed at the cremation ceremony (East Java).

The Baris dance has no less than 30 dance variations and has been performed by the Balinese until now. The word "baris" means "line".
Baris Tunggal is usually performed by male, sometimes by female. This traditional dance depicts the leadership and toughness of the Balinese soldiers on their way to the battlefield. The movement is steady, firm, energetic and dynamic, and also accompanied by sharp eye movements (sledet).
