Mesabat-sabatan Biu is a unique tradition held for recruiting candidates for youth group leaders in Tenganan Dauh Tukad Village, Manggis, Karangasem Regency. The term mesabat-sabatan biu consists of the word "mesabatan" means throwing each other, and "biu" means banana. It is intended for a psychological test for prospective leaders in the village.
This ritual is carried out from generation to generation. This ceremonial procession is held in conjunction with the “Usaba Katiga” ritual, a ceremony in the third month of the Tenganan Dauh Tukad calendar (around May).
The youth prepared ingredients for the ritual (called "ngalang"), in which they collected coconuts, bananas and other ingredients from agricultural fields owned by local residents.
These fruits will be carried as an expression of gratitude to the Creator for the prosperity given to the village. The coconuts will later be donated to the village, while the bananas will be used in the banana war ritual.
The banana war procession began after the traditional leader had given the signal. Two youths will appear as an officer candidate called "saye" and his deputy called "penampih". The two young men will be targets of bananas thrown by other participants (kasinoman).
Even though the two youths were overwhelmed, they had to keep going and never stop. They are currently going through the test as a leader, must be alert and agile in facing physical and psychological attacks. The ritual ends when the saye and penampih have reached the gate of Pura Bale Agung.
The implementation of the mesabat-sabatan biu tradition is expected to maintain a sense of togetherness, brotherhood, intimacy and mutual assistance between youths considering the important role of youth for the future of Tenganan Village.
They are expected to be able to control emotions, eliminate feelings of hostility, and become figures capable of maintaining the integrity of the village. The elected youths are expected to become the backbone of the village, who always mentally and physically strong in carrying out their duties as village leaders. This ritual is closed with "megibung" or a meal together at Pura Bale Agung and followed by all villagers.
