Batu Bolong Temple Canggu, a magical temple overlooking the blue ocean and surrounded with beautiful seascapes. This is one of the important temples in Bali and has a status as "Pura Kahyangan Jagat". This temple is close to Batu Mejan Temple, which is also one of the sacred temples on the coastline of Canggu.
This Hindu temple is located in Canggu Village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali. Around the temple there are still fertile rice fields and traditional Balinese houses lined up neatly.
You can access this temple easily by car. There is extensive parking near the beach with low fees, plenty of food-stalls, warungs, and more. In front of it is low-laying grayish-black sand, the Batu Bolong Beach, greet visitors with beautiful scenery and tranquil atmosphere.
There are prohibitions that visitors not allowed to enter the shrine such as: those who are not wearing a traditional Balinese outfit and women during their period (menstruation).
This temple is one of the century-old temples in Bali, sacred and highly respected. There is no definite and official publication about the history of the temple establishment. But its existence is said to be linked to the journey of the holy priest, Mpu Kuturan (11th century) and Dang Hyang Nirartha (15th century).
Mentioned in the Lontar Empu Kuturan and the Lontar Lokakranti that: In his journey, Empu Kuturan found a rock near the sea on the south of Linggasana (Tabanan). In this place, Empu Kuturan saw an old hermit in a solemn meditation. After the hermit was awake there was a dialogue with Empu Kuturan and the place of dialogue was named "Parang Bolong". While the hermit was given the title "Dukuh Dadap Sakti". Mpu Kuturan came to Bali and arrived at Teluk Padang (Silayukti/Padang Bay) in the year 923 Caka or 1001 AD.
Meanwhile in the Lontar Tutur Ida Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh, which was related to the Lontar Dwijendra Tatwa, mentioned that: the Batubolong Temple was established in connection with Anjangsana Ida Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh (Danghyang Nirartha). Danghyang Nirartha came to Bali during the reign of King Dalem Waturenggong in 1460-1550 AD.
Batu Bolong comes from the word "batu" mean stone/rock and "bolong" means hollow. From this hollow stone, fresh water springs up. Furthermore, the fresh water is used for holy water (tirtha).
This temple is devoted to worship Ida Bhatara Segara. The piodalan ceremony takes place every 210 days (6 months in Balinese Calendar) on Wednesday or Buda Umanis wuku Prangbakat. Balinese comes during the ceremony, wearing their traditional costumes, carrying offerings and praying for blessings of salvation and harmony.
This temple is a place for held the Mesucian rituals (purification) for sacred objects, pratima, pralingga, etc., from temples in Bali. An example: during a certain ceremony, Ida Bhatari Dewi Danuh in Batur Kintamani (Bangli Regency) carries out rituals of mesucian in Batu Bolong Temple Canggu (Badung Regency). Also, this place hosted several Balinese rituals such as: Melasti Ceremony, Pekelem, Purnama Kapat, and others.
From the parking area, visitors pass through the entrance to the outermost temple courtyard. You can see the beauty of the temple with traditional architecture, candi bentar, wantilan, stone statues and more. Beautiful "meru" spotted with tiered roofs up to several levels, made of hard wood and black palm-fiber (ijuk).
The temple stands majestically with high artistic value, shady, shrouded in a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The crushing waves, frangipani blooms and the smell of incenses blend in harmony and created a great spiritual vibe. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, blue water and a magnificent sunset. This is amazing place, sacred and worth a visit!
