Batukaru Temple or Batukau is one of the mountain temples of Bali. This temple is situated on the southern slope of Mt Batukaru, set in the middle of rain forest and covered by holy vibe, moist mist and cool atmosphere. The temple is located in Wongaya Gede Village, district of Penebel, Tabanan regency, Bali.
Visitors are only charged a modest fee, around 20.000 IDR, and can immediately feel the cool and calm atmosphere, and enjoy the beauty of Batukaru Temple. This holy place is known to hold a lot of history, and is thought to be a place of ascetics in the past.
To visit this place, there are some provisions that have become mutual agreement and apply in Pura Luhur Batukaru. This provision is applied for the security and comfort of the community, both locals and visitors.
The provisions are as follows:
I. Those who are not allowed to enter the temple are
- Ladies who are pregnant
- Ladies who have children got the first teeth
- Children first teeth not fallen out yet
- Ladies during their period
- Devotees getting impure due to death
- Those not wearing traditional cloth (sarong)
II. All devotees entering the temple should maintain cleanliness and environmental conservation.
In accordance with the provisions, visitors who enter Pura Luhur Batukaru for both men and women are required to wear traditional cloth or "sarong" to cover the knees and ankles.
Local people take great care of their ancestral traditions and respect their holy places. That’s why the code of practice when visiting holy places and clothing become the sensitive issues on the island.
