Gunung Payung Beach is categorized as a hidden beach, located deep in the bottom of the limestone hillsides and not too broad. The beach offers stunning scenery including the holy temple of Gunung Payung, hillsides, cliffs, beautiful sea, vast thatch grass, pleasant white sand, and beautiful cave formation at the cliff rock of the beach.
After paying the entrance fee, you can directly drive straight up to the south, where the building "wantilan" and the parking location of the holy temple are located.
From the walkway around the parking area, visitor will start walking down the downhill road. This pathway is made by cutting the limestone hills and creates vertical form of limestone walls flanking the road.
At the end of a downhill road, visitors can enjoy an amazing view, and started to step down a hundreds of stairs.
This is a quite tiring trip, especially when returning from the beach, and also when the rainy season (the stairs can be very slippery). But surely this is comparable to the beauty offered.
On the way down the stairs you can see the beauty of the limestone hillsides, vast thatch grass, and the beautiful blue-green ocean. Some visitors sometimes walk out of the path of the stairs and down the trail on the hillside.
For information, the trail is narrow, there is no grip, steep and very dangerous, especially during the rainy season. Still, there are always visitors who tried to take pictures around this thatch grass area (on the steep hillsides).
Fatigue will be paid off when you see the last few steps and greeted by waves and beautiful white sand.
At low tide, visitors can explore this coast, along the white sand up to the end on the west, while enjoying beautiful views of the hillside from the beach. Then proceed to the east, along the amazing cave formations formed from rocks while finding an interesting spot.
This coast has a thick layer of white sand, so when the weather is scorching visitors can still sunbathe on the beach. It is certainly different conditions from the beach that has dark sand because it tends to heat when the hot weather (absorbs heat).
Visit in the morning to provide flexibility because there are still a few people on the beach. While in the afternoon with an opportunity to watch the sunset is certainly no less interesting.
The area of the Pura Gunung Payung and the beaches are also a part of the Gunung Payung Cultural Park. You can visit this place from 8 am to 7 pm. Gunung Payung Cultural Park is situated at Kutuh Village, District of South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali.
